Christantus Uche Fuels Comfortable Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually secures them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the knockout stages, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season proved no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the traveling side.
