Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
